The most heavily mined area in the Falklands. Estimated that there's over 3,500 "minimum metal" plastic antipersonnel and anti-vehicle mines buried under the sand dunes between Yorke Bay and the airport.
The Argentines fully expected the British to stage an amphibious landing here to retake the airport. They ended up scrapping that plan and coming in overland from the west instead. The mines remain; the area is fenced off and likely to remain inaccessible for the forseeable future. The much smaller area around Surf Bay held 1,000 mines and took over a decade and many millions of dollars (as well as the lives of 14 British deminers) to clear fully.
