  • Let it be known that when this school opened in 1959 and for 25 years after it was called "Nallwood junior high school" and served grades 7-9! I ought to know..I went there! Kids from John Diemer, Nall Hills, Indian Creek, and Valley View Elementary schools went there. From Nallwood they went on to SM South High. Nallwood was named for the street "nall" which runs N and S nearby. IN the 1980s Shawnee Mission USD 512 started to lose students (shrink) so they responded by closing alot of schools and turning their Jr Highs into (yuck) "middle schools" Nall Hills is now closed as is Indian Creek. Valley View was sold to the Catholic Church and is now a parochial school.
  • I went to Nall Hills Elementary, Nallwood, and SM South..graduated in 1972. You are older, but I had Mr Valentine also teacher also. I actually liked him..but one day he blew a gasket and flipped out. Did he have a reputation of being violent with kids when you knew him? A couple other teachers at Nallwood did also..even though things were different back then and what teachers could get away with. Myself and a couple other kids organized a ''Valentine's Day'' Party..sort of a surprise for him since his last day was Valentine. Our class and party got so loud and noisy during the party he flipped out and grabbed me and another kid..Mark Eisenberg...we were class clowns...and literally beat us up. He slammed us against the black board several times, punched us, and it shook us up ..and it tuned out to be traumatic for the class..we were all stunned. Mark and I took out punishment like kids did back then..but one girl, my friend Robin Kushner, was very upset. Her Dad was a Psychiatrist...and she went home upset and her Dad called Mark and mines parents and filled them in on what happened. It turned out to be a really big deal and mess. It was different time then..today no telling how much trouble he'd be in . There was another time mark adn I were goofing off in class again..it was earlier in the year...he made him and I sit under his desk with our feet sticking out...and repeatedly jumped full force and all his weight..on our feet and ankles throughout the time we were under there. We tried to act manly about it like it was no big deal...but it was a bad memory that stuck. He did injure my feet and ankles. I remember having a hard time walking for a month after he did it. I did behave better, though...up until Valentines Day obviously. He was a loaded cannon...I see that now. I wish I could see this guy now, lol. I went into The Army years later...and it would be fun to pay him back...let's just put it that way. I'd like to see him jump on somebodies feet again...you can bet that, lol. Mark and I were not bad guys..we were good kids ..but we did joke around a lot..that is all. I've always wonder if this guy ever hurt any other kids.
  • Sort of. Actually this school's first classes were in 19661 to 62. I was in the first 7th grade class. Elementary schools sending kids to this school, Nallwood Jr High, also came from Marsh Bagby and Linwood. SM South didn't open until fall, 1966.Seniors @ SM East and West, 67 had their choice to stay or go to SM South when it opened and if they were on the boarder between SM South and East or SM South and West. Nallwood actually is the name of the subdivision where the Jr High was built.
  • I think your history is more accurate than others posted. I moved from LA to Leawood in '62, attending only for 9th grade. SM South was not built yet, so all of us went on to East. Also, if memory serves, a number of my 9th grade classmates said they had transferred in from Meadowbrook when Nallwood opened, so that your listing of first classes in '61 makes sense.
  • We moved to Overland Park in 1966-67, and I and one of my sisters went to Nall Hills Elementary, with our older sister going to Nallwood Junior High. We only were in Kansas for a year, but I enjoyed it, except the principal at the elementary was a bit scary!!!!!
