The GSA complex sits on the former site of the Kansas City Speedway. - FORMER location of the Department of Energy's - Kansas City Plant The present facility was built in 1942 for manufacturing of Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engines, later it would produce Pratt & Whitney Jet Engines for the Navy's F-9 Panther aircraft. In 1949 a small portion of this facility was used by the Atomic Energy Commission and operated by then contractor Bendix Aviation Company to manufacture non-nuclear components for nuclear weapons. This facility was known as the Kansas City Plant (KCP). The use of the square footage of this facility by A.E.C. (later known as Department of Energy & National Nuclear Security Administration) had increased for this purpose until achieving its pinnacle in production and personnel employed the early 1990's at the end of the COLD WAR. Today the main tenant is the G.S.A., with N.O.A.A. and the U.S. Marines using a small area. For the most part this facility and it's buildings are empty, in care taker status until its T.B.D. date for its demolition. Today, the Kansas City Plant is located north of the former Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base main runway over run area. This site roughly 7 miles to the south.
