Crash site of Southern Flight 242, April 4, 1977. DC-9-31 (N1335U) enroute from Huntsville, AL to Atlanta, GA suffered dual engine failure and hail damage including a broken windshield after penetrating severe thunderstorm. Attempted landing on Ga. Hwy 92 Spur (present day Ga. Hwy. 381). 62 fatalities on aircraft, 8 on ground. 16 survivors on aircraft. Investigation concluded crash result of pilot error in attempting to penetrate a thunderstorm, and failure of airline dispatchers to provide up to date weather information to flight crew.
