ARASAVILLI(RURAL)(village code-26) is in SRIKAKULAM mandal (Mdl code-19) of SRIKAKULAM Dt (Dt code-1), AP.
A popular Hindu piligrimage, Arasavalli is the home of the famous sun temple. It has the distinction of being the only temple where the Sun God, whom the devout describe as Pratyaksha Narayana, is worshipped daily.
According to the popular legend, Indra, the lord of the Heaven attempted to force his entry into the Koteeswara Temple at an untimely hour following which Nandi had kicked him and prevented his access to the temple. Indra was thrown a mile away and fell unconscious. It was in this unconscious state that he saw the vision of Lord Surya or the Sun God commanding him to build a temple in His name which will rid him of his humiliation and angst. Lord Indra took heed of the command and enshrined the Sun God and started his worship at Arasavalli.
The presiding deity at Arasavalli Temple is the 5 feet black granite image of Surya with His consorts Padma, Usha and Chaaya by His side. They are all stationed on a chariot driven by seven horses. The doorkeepers Pingala and Danda and the saints Sanaka and Sananda are shown standing at the base of the image. The most important festival celebrated in Arasavalli Temple is the Ratha Saptami festival during which people who are suffering from eye and skin related aliments are said to be cured by the blessings of the Lord.
