Popash School (demolished)

school, historical layer / disappeared object

The Popash School Building was an old school house (on private property) for the formerly bustling town of Popash. The letters spelled out the town name on the front of the school, which was established in June 4, 1895. W. J. Jackson was the first supervisor of the school; this particular building was opened in 1912 until its closure in 1948.

The property was bought in 1979 by a private owner, according to a 1991 Tampa Tribune article. A fence was then erected around the property and building, preventing entry, due to an increasing number of vandals and visitors. The property was then used for staging trucks and tractor trailers. In late December 2008, the building was demolished, ending any hopes for preservation.

  • Photo courtesy of me, taken in December 1996. It shows the glass windows on the front of the building, just to the right. The owner saw me, but after he saw that I was alone, and only holding a camera, he said: "Just don't touch or destroy anything inside."
  • Quel dommage ! Vous avez de vieilles batisses superbes. Sauvez votre patrimoine !!
