Name Origin: Hernando De Soto, the Spanish Explorer. There are two counties named after him; the other, Hernando County, is to the northwest, in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. County Area: 637 sq. mi. (1650 km. sq.); 40th largest county in Florida (tied with Hardee County). DeSoto County used to include Hardee, Highlands, Glades, and Charlotte Counties.
