Newmarket, one of Auckland City's largest commercial districts. Named for the "new" open air markets for cattle which were established here in the 1880s and which replaced the earlier sale-markets at the bottom of Queen Street. Large numbers of cattle and other stock were driven up the Great South Road or came by the new railway line. Until the 1980s this shopping centre was quite small but the turn of the 21st century has seen a vast growth of retailing and office space here; it has now arguably replaced Queen Street & Krd as Auckland's main shopping area.
