Emirau (also spelled Emira) is the second-largest island in the St Matthias Group, in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. During the Second World War it became an Allied military base. The runways and roads built are still in evidence today; the island has never been rehabilitated since the Allied takeover, though the population returned soon after the war. Early explorer William Dampier named it Squally Island, but the name is rarely used.
