This university-level institution was founded in October 1953, at the end of the war, as part of the national reconstruction effort. There are three engineering faculties (Architecture, Construction and Buildings Material) and three research institutes. Recent changes to the curriculum find some departments focusing on environmental engineering and sustainable development This is one of the dozen DPRK institutions to confer doctoral degrees. It is part of a science consortium of P'yŏngyang universities that also includes the P'yŏngyang University of Mechanical Engineering the Kim Chaek Institute of Technology.
