Designed by Colonel De Carpilhet of the Royal Corps of Enigineering, the fort was constructed between 1777 and 1785.It was built to protect Saint-Malo and the Clos Poulet from English attacks.

The fort was used during both World Wars. During the First World War, it held German soldiers as prisoners, and during the Second World War, it became an ammunition and torpedoes dump for the German army.

Only 13 bunkers survived WWII, as before leaving the fort in 1944, the German army blew up all the bunkers to the right of the entrance. The fort was decommissioned by the army and offered for sale in 1988. In 1989 it was bough by the town of Saint-Père. The municipality and a group of volunteers then set to work to restore it and the fort opened to the public in July 1989.
