Built between 1782 and 1783, the Powder Magazine is 46 meters long by 13 meters wide, it is the largest magazine in Europe. It is flanked by many external buttresses along its length, which were designed to force a vertical rather than lateral wave in case of explosion of its reserves powders. The magazine was later used to store reserves of explosives for coastal fortifications.
