Melur is a Municipal Town in Madurai District of Tamilnadu.
The Lord Shiva Temple & goddess Draupathi, who was the wife of Pandavas are famous.
The Pookkuli festival is celebrated every year by the Draupathi Amman Temple.
The two important events are Beeman - Keesakan Fight & the Pookkkuli.
In the first event one person will be acting as Bima & other as Keesakan.
The very appearance of Beema will have a terrifying effect on children.
Keesakan will try to run away from Bima & the latter will chase him & kill him.
The chase will go on in all main streets & it will be quite interesting to watch.
On the Pookkuli day devotees will perform fire walking.

  • The Nondikoil Jallikattu, Bheeman Kheesakan chase, the Pookuzhi, the Chekkadi Bazaar, the Masthan Kadai, Padma vilas, Jai Hind Theatre, the river flowing by the side of Padma vilas and the Girl's High School, the Ganesh Theatre, the Peria Kadai Veedhi, the Arts College, the very old Boys' High School (where my father was teacher upto 1965!!), the New Agraharam (where I played lot of games (to name a few - Pachha Kudhirai thandirathu, Kittipullu, Goli Kundu, Pattam vidarathu, Pondi game, L O N D O N game, theepatti padam, cricket,). The school life and the college life, I can never forget. But these stories relate to mid 60's to mid 70's. The present Melur would have expanded to a monstrous proportion. I am presently staying in Tiruvannamalai.
  • Though I was born in Madurai Santhai hospital, I was brought to Melur when I was months old. I had my school education and college education in Melur. We lived in New Agraharam till 1973, moved to Kathappa chetty street and then to our own house at Kasturba Nagar, behind the hospital. I hope still some of my college friends woule be living in Melur doing business.
  • Dont waste your life in Melur... come out of the town.............

  • Soon very big projects are coming inside the melur town,. near star nagar vellanathanpatti flat areas, buy some land on that area, this is true, in coming years, the land rate moves from lakhs to 2 to 3 crores, bcz i was born in melur taluk, developments like spinning mill, shopping mall, any some other big project will come with the help of ministers,. so dont miss the chance to buy a land in vellanathanpatti flat area nearby after star nagar 1st left cut inside the developing areas is going on the progress. ok enjoy to buy a land.
