  • This map of Chaffer's Passage is incorrect. Chaffer's Passage is the passage on the Miramar side of Barrett's Reef. The passage was known as Ma-angiangi by local Maori tribes of the nineteenth century (meaning gentle or sheltered waterway) and was used by then as the preferred waka pathway when travelling out to Tarakena Bay or Island Bay (Pae-kawakawa). It was less tidal and more sheltered and thus an easier trip in the waka.
