National Wind Technology Center
The center provides an ideal environment for the development of advanced wind energy technologies.

The goal of the research conducted at the center is to help industry reduce the cost of energy so that wind can compete with traditional energy sources, providing a clean, renewable alternative for our nation's energy needs.

  • Years ago a French firm bid to build a giant wind turbine with a design speed of 25 MPH. The people ordering it required a safety factor of 5. (125 MPH) The French thought them crazy but built it that way. The first year it was up wind speed at the top of the tower exceeded 125 MPH and blew the tower down. Wind power goes up as the cube of velocity not in a linear fashion.
  • I have driven past this location numerous times in the past two years or so. They have four turbines and the most I have seen in operation at any one time was one. Seems like a big waste of taxpayer money.
