Tasu

Canada / British Columbia / Prince Rupert /
 copper mine, mining, iron mine
 Upload a photo

Site of a former iron ore and copper mine and community in remote Tasu Sound. The mine operated from 1967 to 1983, and was supported by a townsite that included several apartment buildings, a hotel, general store, bakery, cafeteria, dining room and pub, as well as a school and recreation centre with swimming pool. Access was by floatplane or boat. The residents of Tasu had regular visits from the families at Sewell Inlet logging camp nearby.

The BC government briefly considered using the townsite for a prison after the mine closed, but when those plans were dropped the townsite was demolished. Currently, West Coast Resorts has a floating fishing lodge in Tasu Sound.

I lived there from 1980-1983. I was only 3 but still remember it well. I lived on the hill above the park/playground. I don't remember too many names of people though. I remember the Sullivans (Charlie, Ruth and their kids Sheila and Buddy), a blond boy I used to play with named Gregory, a british girl named Anne-Marie, the Kims, and the Chandras. I remember swimming, I remember the lodge that us kids would hang out in, I remember playing on the rocks by the water, I remember swinging on ropes from trees. Great times.

I lived there 1981-1982. was 5 years old when we left... still have great memories... tobogganing down the road, the mining trucks, the rides in the float planes, cub scouts, movies in the town centre (if that's what it was called), a class trip out on the rocks at low tide... and of course, the fog!!

I lived in Tasu the last few years the mine was open. My Dad, John chambers was a Millwright in the mine. Have so many great memories, and met so many wonderful people. Tasu made quite the impression on me, some of the most memorable would be......the great swim little swim club I was involved in, playing in the coolest fort someone had built in the woods close to there house, fishing and swimming off the dock & checking out the catch the fisherman would come in with....HUGE HALIBUT ! Running through the old bunk houses with friends, trying to freak each other out, feeding deer in the front yard, I remember the excitement in the air, when the barge would come in, and stock up the store, the walks to Black sand beach with my family, the freedom, sense of adventure...Would love to go back, for a visit :) Would love to touch base, with who may know me. Does ANYONE know where I could find photos of the community that existed there?
  • Brook (guest)
My name is Brook Valliant, my dad's name is Wayne, my mom's name is Sandra. There were many pictures ( one of my mom and the baseball team ) available on MSN which then moved to Multiply. I would be interested to find out who put up the original site, as they might still be able to put something together somewhere else.

I too started on Toumis crew and did shifts on tug and shiploader. worked there between 77and 81. Last job in CCRO, and the RCMP gave me my drivers licence in Tasu. Lived in Bunkhouse A and B and yes the halibut and salmon-wow. Did a SCUBA course whilst at Tasu mine. Whilst I couldnt wait to get out I now look back with fond memories of the place.

Hi, I ran the primary crusher in 67-70. Got buried a few times cos of water in the ore passes, crazy times but luved it. I had a good room mate, Frank Goden I hope he,s still alive. A lot of us were naughty boys back then in Tasu,s early days but still worked our asses off to keep it going. Worked another 7-8 mines after that. Anyway if you,ve got any memories I,m at mb3483@telus.net. Be great to hear ghosts from the past. cheers Mike Brewer.

I worked in the Tasu mine from 1969 to 1972. It was a great place to be young and wild and also work hard!! Met some great guys there, will always be a big part of my life. I did save money and decided I needed to go and get some University education. M Meakin

I worked there around 1976 for half a year. Was on Tummi's labour crew and then in the warehouse. I remember Wally John as well. Also recall a big Newfoundlander (great guy) who was over a blasting hole when it went off. Blew him thru the air and he still lived (tough guy). Paid off a new car while I was there and spent my free day in the wreck center lifting weights. Did a lot of growing up in six months, but wouldn't trade it for anything! Bernie
