This is a 40-year-old plant, modernisation of the plant considered among the world's most inefficient in terms of energy consumption would cost about US$300-350 million over a period of four, five years. But the plant is hit hard by the global economic crisis, Jamaica's largest alumina producer ALPART is now in "survival mode" and has put a long-planned modernisation programme on hold.
