This is the site of the famous volcanic explosion on August 26, 1883 that destroyed most of the island of Krakatoa and sent huge amounts of debris into the atmosphere, causing red sunsets around the world for months. It was the largest explosion in recorded history and the sound was heard as far away as Africa. Additionally, the tsunami sparked by the explosion swept over the low-lying coast of Java, killing an estimated 36,000 people. This was the greatest recorded death toll from a tsunami until 2004, when tsunamis sparked by an earthquake near Sumatra killed over 200,000.

On 27 August four enormous explosions took place at 05:30, 06:44, 10:02, and 10:41 local time. At 5:30 A.M, the first explosion was at Perboewatan volcano, triggering a tsunami heading straight to Telok Betong. At 6:44 A.M, Krakatoa exploded again on Danan volcano, with the resulting tsunami stretching eastward and westward. The largest explosion, at 10:02 A.M, was so violent that it was heard 3,110 km (1,930 mi) away in Perth, Western Australia, and the Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,800 km (3,000 mi) away, where they were thought to be cannon fire from a nearby ship.

  • An uninhabited island volcano, Krakatoa is located near the southern end of Lampung Bay. Krakatoa is three hours away by boat from Canti, a fishing village near Kalianda, South Lampung. It is surrounded by four small islands. One of them, called Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa), has grown higher every year and is active. Anak Krakatau emerged from the bottom of the sea between three other islands by early 1928 (45 years after Krakatoa's 1883 formidable eruption).
