In June 1891, several mineshafts were dug here which produced several tons of gold and silver ore. The mining camp of Vanderbilt Spring developed from this start. A short-lived goldrush began in the fall of 1892.

A ten-stamp mill became operational at the Gold Bronze mine in March 1894. In June of that year, a miner fell to his death down a shaft at the Gold Bronze mine.

The Gold Bronze mine produced $47,000 during its first two years. Its shaft eventually reached 260 feet. Shortages of water, parts, or ore forced the mill to shut down often, and the Gold Bronze company was placed in receivership in June 1895.
