A quite handsome Victorian building largely obscured by the ugly, permanent canopies of the lively marketplace added in 1966-70. It was built as the Exchange in 1850 to the design of the architect William Flint. The upper floor (which was used as temporary lodgings for the magistracy), bridge and tower was subsequently added by F. W. Ordish in 1855.
