Built by Belgian company Sixco during the 80's, Qalat Saleh had large underground facilities to house upto two dozen aircraft, munitions, fuel and maintenance equipment. The only facilities above the ground are the entry ramp and crew quarters althought these are semi recessed.
The base was allegedly struck by an Iranian missile during the Iran-Iraq war but suffered no damage. 300 men would be based here and the base was fully self sufficient even under NBC conditions.
It is one of 8 underground bases built by Sixco.
