Opened in March 1993 as a Remand Centre/Young Offender Institution, two new units were opened in June 1996.

In May 2001 Buttermere and Windermere Units were re-roled and are now dedicated Juvenile Units.

Operational capacity: 527 as of 1st November 2006

Accommodation: Single cells with a small number of double cells.

Reception criteria: Lancaster Farms is a shared site establishment. Half is Young Offenders 18-21 years old and the other half Juveniles 15-17 years old. The Young Offenders are predominantly remand/trials and convicted prisoners. The Juveniles are remands and convicted serving Detention Training Orders.

Regime: Activities include Learning & Skills, Workshops (including Painting & Decorating, Building Operatives, Multi-skills, Arts , IT, Catering, Waste Management), Farms & Gardens, Industrial Cleaning and Physical Education. A range of Offending Behaviour Programmes is offered, including Enhanced Thinking Skills, Juvenile Enhanced Thinking Skills, Short Duration Drugs Programme, Alcohol Awareness, Restorative Justice and others. Several partners are on-site, including Lancashire Probation Service, Lancashire YOT, Lancaster & Morecambe College, Morecambe Bay PCT, Connexions, Jobcentre Plus, Lifeline, SOVA, YMCA and NYAS. We also work with the British Red Cross and the Prince's Trust.
