  • I commend you for your thorough recounting of Bulusan's history ; your prose is simple yet elegant, enlightening and instructing at the same time. I would like to know more about yourself, Mr. Jabbey, if you wouldn't mind. It is rare to encounter literati of high caliber, and Bulusan would do very well with you as its preserver of history and culture. Perhaps you could add more photographs to the collection above? My middle name is Gallinera, and I have spent many a Maytime of my childhood in Looban ; languorous afternoons were spent chasing dragonflies if not engaged in "payag-payagan" with my neighbor-playmates. Time was when seashells were plentiful in Dap-dap, and the "sungka" troughs had no lack of these cowrie buttons. An afternoon saunter on the beach invariably ended at the baluarte de piedra which you mentioned , and the return home to the cooking fires and eventual dinner had to wait until the San Bernardino lighthouse began blinking. My cousins and I had to reluctantly trudge past the looming walls of the church, knowing that a wonderful day had just ended. But tomomrrow was another bright day, and our dreams that night were filled with more dragonflies and cowrie shells. My name is Ralph, and the nostalgic memories of Bulusan must have been triggered by your photographs of Bulusan lake as well as the picture of the church. Do you have scenes of the baluarte of Dap-dap and the church belfry (whose steps I have climbed, wondering if the dried vines that held the iron bell would hold). Again, thank you for your historical perspective . Bulusan is also my town.
