Austurland Region. Population: 717 inhabitants (World Gazetteer, Calculation 2010).
Seyðisfjörður (“The Fjord of the Broth”) is a village in the Austfjörður (Eastern fjord), a 26 km (16 mi) drive from Fljótsdalshérað (Egilsstaðir), across the Fjarðar river.
Seyðisfjörður is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with several waterfalls around the town. Seyðisfjörður is known for its old wooden buildings and its harbor. Seyðisfjörður as such was built in the mid-19th century, but Norwegian fishermen made it grow between 1870 and the beginning of the XX century. Seyðisfjörður received its municipal charter in 1895.
Despite Iceland's status at this time, Seyðisfjörður has been used as a base for the Commonwealth and US forces during World War II.
With a long-running crisis which affects the Icelandic fishing industry, and, thus, for the local fish-processing plant, and though it remains a significant fishing port on the east coast of Iceland, the village has shifted its economy to tourism.
Seyðisfjörður has a vibrant culture scene thanks to “Skaftfell” (the local art center), an arts festival, “Á seyði”, and the “Mini-ciné” (a small cinema lounge and café), a gallery, and two museums: the “Tækniminjasafn Austurlands” (Eastern Land's Technical Museum) and “Fjarðarselsvirkjun”, the first hydro-electric plant in Iceland, built in 1913.
One ferry route connects Seyðisfjörður to Tórshavn (Faroe Islands) once a week, with the M/F Norröna (normally spelt in Faroese: Norrøna) for 1,482 passengers and 800 cars or 130 trucks.
