One of the four New Towns in Scotland, it was developed from the mid 1950s onward after Glasgow Corporation's infamous Bruce Report which aimed to clear overcrowded slum areas of Glasgow and rehouse the population in both outer suburban estates and New Towns.

Bordered to the North West by the Campsie Hills, many parts of Cumbernauld, e.g. Westerwood are surrounded by stunning scenery.

Famous for the film Gregory's Girl and the saying "What's it called - Cumbernauld"
