It was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Mauretanians, and was inhabited until the the fall of the Roman Empire. This town is considered to be the ancestor of Tétouan. The majority of the remains that today can be visited are dated in the 2nd-3rd century AD, when a Roman fort was built. The fortified outlines of the rectangular fort are easy to trace on the surface, and other remains of the town can be found surrounding it.
