The initial timber iteration of the castle was commenced by Hugh de Grentmesnil (who was gifted Leicester by William the Conqueror). This was later rebuilt by Robert de Beaumont, Count of Meulan (First Earl of Leicester), after its acquisition in the 12th Century.
The oldest, extant part is the Great Hall, which was built by Robert le Bossu after inheriting it in 1118.
In 1450 the hall became the Assize Court and was still used as a magistrates' court up until 1992. The brick façade of the hall dates from 1695 and is the oldest surviving aisled and bay-divided hall in Europe.
