Beech Bound was built in 1895 for iron magnate William Fletcher Burden (ca. 1859-1897) and his wife, Daisy (nee McCoy), by architectural firm Peabody & Stearns; the landscape, which is integral to the estate, was designed by the firm Olmstead, Olmstead & Eliot.

Mrs. Burden (m. 1901 to Dr. Andrew S. Clarke) kept the Scottish Baronial-style home overlooking Newport Harbor until her death. In the 1920s, 'Beech Bound' was purchased as a summer home by Henry Baldwin Hyde Ripley (1889-1959) and his wife, Lesley Fredericka (nee Pearson) (1897-1953). The mansion (now styled 'Beechbound') was split into condominiums in the 1970s.
