Oakwood house was built in 1854 by architect Detlief Lienau for Mrs. John Carey (Mary Alida, nee Astor) (1826-1881), a daughter of William Backhouse Astor and granddaughter of John Jacob Astor. In 1872, the Rhode Island architectural firm of George Champlin Mason & Son was commissioned to design the main living room and music room. Later, in 1875, the Boston firm of Sturgis & Brigham added the tower and kitchen wing.

"J.Brian O’Neill–a Philadelphia developer and the owner of the Carnegie Abbey Club, a golf and yacht club in nearby Portsmouth–says he and his wife, Miriam, bought the estate for $4.5 million in 2005 and spent millions more on a 2 1/2-year restoration."

Owners Peter and Lana de Savary sold to ? April 20, 2010 for $6 million (was on the market for $10.75 million in 2008)
