place with historical importance, cottage, estate (manor / mansion land)
'The Waves' was designed in 1927 by its owner, architect John Russell Pope (1874-1937), and built on the ruins of politician Charles Warren Lippitt's (1846-1924) former summer home, 'Breakwater', which had been destroyed by fire ca. 1924.
A&P grocery store heiress Josephine Hartford Bryce (ca. 1904-1992) was the next owner of 'The Waves'; her daughter Nuala, married Senator Claiborne Pell, and built a cottage, Pelican Lodge, at the northern end of the property. Following its purchase by Wanamaker's Department Store heir Barclay Warburton (1922-1983), 'The Waves' was divided into condominiums.
