estate (manor / mansion land), apartment complex
Built in 1860 for J. Bowles Smith, the large Gothic Revival fieldstone mansion was sold before 1876 to E.S.F. Arnold and was later owned by his son, Samuel Green Arnold.
Before 1907, the Arnolds sold the estate to Howard Augustin Stevenson (1842-1931). The family retained ownership until 1967, when it was demolished for Naval housing.
Located at corner of Carroll Avenue and Bateman Avenue, Hawthorne Villa was set far back on its lot in an English Romantic landscape.
