Founded in 1930 as the Training Institute of leather industry. Over the years, the university several times changed its name, Moscow Institute of Leather Industry, Moscow Technological Institute of Light Industry, Moscow State Academy of Light Industry (MGALP), Moscow State University of Design and Technology.

Faculties: Design, Economics and Management, Technological garments, leather technology, chemical technology and ecology; mechanical; Preparatory department. The faculties have evening form of training.

The 5 story Soviet Constructivist building was designed by B V Efimovich and built in the early 1930s.
