A garbage dump from 1920 until 1959, over 30 acres was added to the island. It was finally closed when a bulldozer was sucked beneath the trash.

As part of the Big Dig transportation project in the late 1990s, soil removed from tunnel projects was used as topsoil for the island converting it into a public park which opened in 2006.
