Govt. Multipurpose Higher Secondary School. (Amravati)

India / Maharashtra / Amravati

In 1861 the Government had organised small schools to impart western education. The Education Department was introduced in the District in 1866. A High School was established in Amravati on November 1st 1866, which later on came to be known as Hindu High School. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the Govt. Mohammedan High School was established at the foot of the Mal Tekeri on Camp Road. This spacious building was constructed in red bricks with well equipped science laboratories. The hostel was on the other end of a very big playground. Now this very building houses the Govt. Multipurpose Higher Secondary School.

  • As per my Daddy’s inputs, besides providing good education, the Govt. Mohammedan High School also had an extraordinary place in Games and Sports. Their performances in hockey, football and sports events in inter-school competition and that on district and Berar levels were always cherished. A rare photograph of early 1930s depicting members of school Hockey Team along with officials is uploaded above, the only recognizable face therein is that of my grandfather late Abdul Ghani (in the center of those sitting in chairs) of Badnera, who afterwards became Legendry Hockey Player and role model for the upcoming generation of young hockey players.
