  • wats the purpose of this building?
  • I think this lace is sinking. I happen to read an articles in spore's newspaers dated 6th July 2009 Condo project halted after carpark sinks A CASE of sinking land has put the brakes on a condominium construction project in Penang. After the gates and a stretch of road in front of the Gurney Park condominium sank 1.2m, the state's municipal council ordered all construction work on the nearby Gurney Paragon condominium to be stopped. Mr Tan Cheng Hui, president of the Penang Municipal Council, said the council has ordered Hunza Properties, Gurney Park's developer, to stop all work on the 43-storey project on Kelawei Road, near state capital Georgetown. The road next to Gurney Park's multi-storey carpark was cordoned off after it sank and cracked at about 8pm on Thursday. Cracks The cracks are estimated to be 1.2m deep and more than 9m long. Mr Tan told Bernama that the developer should rectify the problem and come up with a comprehensive report on the condition of the Gurney Park. He said on Friday: 'They will also have to provide reasons and give a letter of guarantee that the building is safe. 'Until all rectification works are done, the developer and contractor cannot continue with the building project.' He said he had received many reports from residents that construction work was carried out late into the night. Penang state local government and traffic management committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow urged the council to tell the developer and contractors to monitor the situation over the next few days for fear it might worsen. He urged residents not to park their vehicles in or around the affected area for the time being. Hunza group executive chairman Khor Teng Tong said his company would assume full responsibility and added that its consultants have been told to handle the issue. When completed, Gurney Paragon's East and West Towers will comprise two 43-storey buildings, with 240 units of service apartments, as well as a commercial podium and two basement parking facilities. MrKhor told The Star: 'We have identified the cause. The sheet piles that were used by the basement contractor to temporarily hold up the sides of the excavation gave way, which led to the subsidence of the ground behind the sheet piles including the driveway of Gurney Park.' He said they would consult with experts on the safety and stability of the ground to determine if the project could continue. Hunza's engineer, Mr Tong Veng Wye, said an inspection showed Gurney Park buildings, including the multi-storey carpark next to the driveway, were in no danger. He said: 'We've inspected the main pillars and there is no tilting or serious cracks. 'Another fortunate thing is that Gurney Park has basement carparks and that means its foundation is more sturdy and the incident did not affect it.' He said remedial works started on Thursday night, soon after the cracks were discovered, and the inspection report would be ready by Monday. MrKhor said: 'Remedial works are not expected to last longer than 10 days as work will be carried out round the clock.' One of Gurney Park's nearly 1,000 residents, Mr Stephen Abbott, 55, said he saw workers using sand to cover up the cracks and was worried that the cracks and sunken road might cause more cracks.
