The William Gates Building for the Computer Science is located at the southern end of the short road known as the North-South Axis. The building is organized into an A wing (the western ell) and a B wing (the northern ell). The main entrance to the A wing announces the building name. Above that the double-height grand window of the Waterman Library (AKA the Digital Equipment Corporation Library) which houses an Artificial Intelligence library and several older periodicals (most such information is now used by those at the University via stored digitized format). The B wing focuses on venture funding for Silicon Valley software start-ups. The study of venture funding has been partially taken over by departments within the new building for the School of Engineering.

There is an entrance to the lower level at the rounded angle that faces out onto the nearby fountain. At this entrance, on the right is a "Birth of the Internet" plaque:

Faculty member Rajeev Motwani died suddenly in 2009 and is sorely missed.
