This area used to be full of run down homes and apartments where impoverished students and other low income folk lived in squalor and terror. Central location of one of the most massive and ambitious privately funded urban renewal projects in the United States.

  • The area is now known as North Overton, or colloquially as McDougalville, after the developer. It is the largest privately-funded urban renewal project in the US.
  • I grew up here, on the corner of 10th and Avenue S. The conditions when I was a child weren't exactly what I would call "squalid", but it was indeed a rough part of town. However, seeing your childhood home essentially wiped off the map is quite sad, no matter how "undesirable" your neighborhood may have been.
