  • "Bridge of Bairaj" is in fact a misnomer. It is "Madhya Ganga Barrage" constructed in 1984. Earlier there was no bridge at Ganga and a temporary boat-bridge was built in winter season every year and that used to be only link with Meerut and Muzaffarnagar. Construction if of this barrage has greatly facilitated the journey to Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Delhi. On the ohter hand this barrage has nearly devastated the fragile Khadar land ecosystem.
  • I have lived in khadar in 1965 to 1971 in a sequestered farmhouse on the W estern bank of Ganga. The river changed course Westwards such that it was flowing barely a stone"s throw in 1970;we had to leave the land and return to Punjab.Memories:Bijnor was never visited as it was inaccessible ;Shikar of swamp deer and wild boar;Lots of sugarcane,Kharbuza(from "plaje").The barrage came up much later.A veritable trip down memory lane, thanks to technology and Wiki
