Lake Hayk

Lake Hayk (also spelled 'Hayq', meaning 'Lake') is located about 30km (18.7mi)northeast of Dessie in Wollo. Set at elevation of 1,911m (6,270ft) above sea level, it has a maximum debth of 88m (289ft), and is about 6.8km 4.2mi) by 5km (3.1mi), and covers a surface area of 23km² (8.9mi²). On the southwestern shores of the lake lie one of the oldest monastery in Ethiopia, which is believed to have been founded in the 9th century A.D., during the reign of Emperor Dil Na'od.
