The Notch

USA / California / Boulder Creek /

Just five paces from the side of the road you can look 190 feet straight down into the Notch, but watch out for the loose soil.
If you fall in, you'll never get out.

The raised area to the right of this photo was where the most elaborate driftwood shack stood. The sea never came up as high as pictured here, though I have no reason why that would be. The yellow dumptruck is gone as well. Hell, it's been 40 years. One night we got there late and as we descended the path across the sea hole we realized that the waves actually were breaking phosporesent against the rocks, and that our feet struck sparks from the red tide. Who would have imagined then, even in the summer of the moon landing, that such a thing as this aerial view could exist.
