Founded in the early thirteeenth century by William de Courtenay, who was a grandson of Reginald Fitz Urse, one of the four knights who murdered Thomas á Becket at Canterbury Catherdral in 1170. It was therefor dedicated to St. Thomas the Martyr. For many years there was no or limited acces to the site as it was part of a farm but now it is owned by the Landmark Trust and can be rented. One can also look around and visit the museum there.
