  • The Wisconsin Union hosted the first simulcast opera in the country in 1976, in the days when television sound was poor so simultaneous live broadcast on FM radio was a new and exciting possibility. Lighting designer Gilbert Helmsley, recently relocated from New York City, made it possible. The lights were run by a prototype light control board based around a microprocessor, built by locals Bill Foster, Fred Foster, Gary Bewick and me, James Bradley. It became one of the first commercial products to use a microprocessor and the initial product of the nascent Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc. of Middleton.
