City park (Prypiat)

Ukraine / Kyyivska / Prypyat / Prypiat
 park, abandoned / shut down

The ferris wheel was to become a world famous symbol of the tragedy that occurred here. The last time I visited moss around the park remained much more radioactive than in the surrounding area.

Some excellent photographs of the rest of the city park (non-fairground) i.e. properganda boards & duck ponds can be found at: www.urbanxphotography.co.uk/pripyat-city-park

most likely has to do with wind conditions at the time of the incident.

The square in the middle of the park was used as landing for helicopters.

i think it has to do with it being open and not covered with buildings and highly contaminated choppers landing here.

Radioactive dust settles unevenly. You could be perfectly safe outside the sarcophagus and succumb to a small spot of radiation miles and miles away. Any place around here can be extremely radioactive. ALWAYS have a Geiger counter. One second it can be reading nothing, the next it could read 500 r.

The helicopters landed here. Returning from their service, a lot of radiation was brought here and washed off by the rain.

It depents of the material. Paintet steel is more radioactive as the normal steel. Normal steel could be "brushed off" with "water" and the painting not. So i think that is the reason why.
