"Montrose" was designed c. 1914 by Wilson Eyre for John Barnes Townsend, a newspaper executive. The main house was constructed of stone and consisted of 22 rooms, built on an estate of 36 acres. It was a gift from Townsend’s father-in-law, who was a partner in the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co.
1912: Grounds bought by Townsend’s father-in-law
1914: Montrose built
1920s: Gardener’s cottages built
1947: Townsend dies with no heirs to whom to give the estate
1959: Mrs. Townsend dies
1961: Contents of house auctioned; estate becomes school & synagogue to Har Zion temple
1977: Sun Oil Co. purchases Montrose; renovates mansion; builds hotel & meeting complex
