Sail Rock and "the bone yard."
On 23 December 1994 Mark Foo was killed here by a wipeout while taking off on a 20 foot wave. His body was found later that morning over by the entrance to the harbor.
It is generally believed he drowned when he got caught in the extreme underwater turbulence of the bone yard reef.
Photo above shows Shawn Alladio navigating cautiously through the turbulent soup of the boneyard on a moderately big day.
Under new rules, such watercraft will allowed at Maverick's for rescue only, no tow-ins (other than a few designated days during winter.)
