As stated, it was known as Five Arches, with all but one ? being used when it was built in the late 18th C. Apart from the GWR (Bristol & North East Somerset), another arch was required for the brook, one for the road between Radstock / Norton (via Welton Hollow prior to Somervale Road) and yet another for the Somerset Coal Canal tramway (dramway) from Radstock basin to Old Welton & Welton Hill Pits - with a little used 'branch incline' to Wellsway Pit. (The tunnel for this incline is still evident on the north side of Somervale Road, just before Welton Road converges).

  • the former Railway from Templecombe to Bath Spa passes the Viaduct
  • Known locally as "Five Arches". The Somerset and Dorset Railway (Bath to Bournemouth line, closed in 1966) crossed over the Great Western Bristol to Frome route at this point. The GWR line is now used as the "Norton-Radstock Greenway" cycle and walking route.
  • Actually there are Five Arches in this structure. See <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7493003@N03/2062377783/">here</a> for two of them and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7493003@N03/2063171876/">here</a> for the other three. The <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7493003@N03/2062371445/">culvert</a> in the embankment further west and the former bridge over the Somervale Road were separate structures entirely.
