Home of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Italian Parliament. Originally commissioned in the early 17th century as a palace for Cardinal Ludovisi, the nephew of Pope Gregory XV. Shortly after the Italian unification in the late 19th century, this became the seat of the Chamber of Deputies.
It has 630 seats, a majority of which is controlled presently by liberal-conservative party People of Freedom. Twelve deputies represent Italian citizens outside of Italy. Deputies meet in the Palazzo Montecitorio. The current president is Gianfranco Fini, a leader of the People of Freedom party.
