The turbine hall of the Chernobyl NPP is a long structure approximately 600 meters in length, housing turbine generators and auxiliary equipment. Each power unit is equipped with two turbine generators, each with a capacity of 500 MW, providing a total electric power output of 1000 MW per unit.

The turbines used at the station are five-cylinder models K-500-65/3000, developed by the Kharkiv Turbine Plant. The electric generators are of the TVV-500 type, featuring water-cooled stators and hydrogen-cooled rotors. Each turbine generator has a total length of 39 meters and weighs approximately 1200 tons.

As a result of the April 26, 1986, disaster, the turbine hall of Unit 4 was partially destroyed, leading to fires in various rooms and on the roof.

Following the accident, the turbine hall was repurposed for various uses, including the storage of radioactive waste.

Comments

  • Reactor 4 section is separated by a wall to prevent get inside sarcophagus
  • This building had an asphalt cover on the roof, beware playing with fire, no problem, it was removed in 1986
  • they did not follow strict regulations on building nuclear reactors & may i also ad that the model chosen was not a good choice and they the reactors were sloppily run and major rules sidelined
  • @josh they were actually going to put PWR reactors at the station but even though they were warned RBMK reactors released 40x the radiation they for some stupid reason still went ahead and put it the RBMK ones
