Founded by the Prince Boris Konstantinovichin 1352. The Euthymius monastery was one of the five largest monasteries in Russia. Spaso- Evfimiev Monastery became a prison for political dissidents.

The Spaso- Evfimiev Monastery with its impressive Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral and equally impressive cathedral frescoes, the unique 16th century Uspenskaya Church and the 16th-17th century Zvonnitsa belltower is a masterpiece of Suzdal architecture.

Because it is surrounded by high red walls, the monastery often used by film-makers to represent the Moscow Kremlin.
