Unit 3

Ukraine / Kyyivska / Prypyat /
abandoned / shut down, nuclear reactor, 1981_construction

Reactor type: RBMK-1000
Electrical power: 1000 MW
Construction start: March 1, 1976
Connected to the grid: December 3, 1981
Commissioned: June 8, 1982
Decommissioned: December 15, 2000

After the 1986 accident, the roof of Unit 3 was covered with a special dome (presumably because the roof was contaminated with radioactive particles from Unit 4).

Starting from December 5, 2000, the reactor’s power was gradually reduced in preparation for shutdown. On December 14, the reactor was operating at 5% power. At 13:17 on December 15, 2000, by the order of the President of Ukraine, during a live broadcast of the Chernobyl NPP — National Palace "Ukraine" teleconference, the reactor of Unit 3 at the Chernobyl NPP was permanently shut down with the turning of the emergency protection key (AZ-5). The station ceased electricity generation.

  • Someone write more please.
  • I can't Belive the ukrainian goverment would let people work near the site of the mealtdown.
  • well people have to work here to maintain the containment structure. not a very safe job but a very well paying job.
  • actually radiation not bad for what happened. it is not that strong in the area, and this is big misconception of people who don't know much about it. sarcophagus is just fine, and the radiation inside is not good, but it works as containing it, so outside it's not very much at all.
  • Hey, there's the 4th reactor in the photo, not 3rd!
  • old information and the Russian, but http://vasi.net/community/kartinki/2009/06/05/novyjj_sarkofag_nad_chajes_eshhjo_odin_sarkofag._4_foto.html
  • You see part of reactor 3 to the right in the picture
  • it is ironical thatin pripyat amusement park there are 74 R/H and here, 50 mts from unit 4 only 250 microroentgens/h
  • chernobyl is one of the former ussr,s oldest sites
  • yuri zaporozh i think that you dont know much about radiation and it is not something to be taken lightly it also is a very serious matter
  • josh, chernobyl dates back from 1100 something, i don't think communism existed back then
  • Actually, the reactor 3 was finally shut down on 15 December 2000, at 13:17 (UTC+ 2h). In fact, the unit 3 had been disconnected from the national power grid since 5 December 2000.
